Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-10-06
These terms apply to the use of unpassword, which consists of the web application at https://unpassword.nullthrone.xyz/app/ and the unpassword Gmail add-on. unpassword is provided by Thomas Sprock (Nullthrone), see the imprint.
1. The service
unpassword removes the password protection of PDF, Office and ZIP files in your browser, using a password you supply. It is free of charge.
The source code is published under the MIT License. The license governs the code. These terms govern the hosted service.
2. Permitted use
You may use unpassword only for files that you are entitled to unlock, with a password you obtained lawfully. Typical examples are statements, payslips or reports addressed to you.
You must not use unpassword to:
- access files you are not authorised to open;
- circumvent technical protection measures of third parties, for example under § 95a of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) or comparable laws;
- determine, guess or test passwords you do not know.
unpassword is designed to support only legitimate use. It accepts one typed password per attempt, limits failed attempts, and preserves PDF permission restrictions unless you supply the owner password.
3. Your responsibility
Removing a password removes a layer of protection. You are responsible for storing the unlocked file securely, for example in an account protected by two-factor authentication or in encrypted storage. You are also responsible for keeping a copy of the original until you have checked the result.
4. No access to your data
Decryption runs entirely in your browser. The provider does not receive your files, your passwords or the decrypted content. See the privacy policy and the security model.
5. Google services
If you use Google Drive or Gmail with unpassword, Google's terms of service and privacy policy also apply to those services.
6. Availability and changes
unpassword is provided as is, without any commitment to availability, features or support. We may change or discontinue the service at any time.
7. Liability
unpassword is provided free of charge. The provider is liable only for intent and gross negligence. This does not limit liability for injury to life, body or health, or liability under mandatory statutory provisions such as the German Product Liability Act.
8. Final provisions
German law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of your country of habitual residence. If any provision is invalid, the remaining provisions stay in effect.
